Mass Communication for Business
When communication involves masses, the process is known as Mass Communication. In this process either a person or a group of people relay a message through a chosen channel to reach a multitude of people. These channels comprise of television, radio, print and internet. The sender of the message is usually a professional and symbolizes an organization. Any communication involves few important steps while the message travels from the sender to receiver. In mass communication too, there is a sender who sends a message through a channel, and the receiver decodes the message and processes the feedback. Mass communication is more formal; therefore, the procedure involves a communicator with a specific message, which is monitored by the editor before reaching the audience.
Types of media
Mass media has become widespread in this era. Being connected to social media channels is no longer confined to personal relationships but extends to business as well. To stay afloat and thrive, every business needs to make its presence felt in the public consciousness. Every organization faces competition from their rivals. Through advertising and marketing communication they are better equipped to deal with the situation. Advertising, Journalism and Public Relations are the main pillars of mass communication. Advertising encourages buying behavior among the customers, while journalism relays news on any significant event of a business. Public Relations as a function influences public opinion about a product or an organization.
History and prevalence today
The concept of mass communication was created through a 1944 study ‘The People’s Choice’ by Paul Lazarsfeld, Bernard Berelson, and Hazel Gaudet. During the Presidential election campaign, they introduced a two-step communication theory to observe the impact of media on voting. Mass communication has come a long way since then.
Social networking sites – Face book and Twitter – have revolutionized Mass media in recent years. This has allowed the businessmen and women easy options to remain connected with their customers. Hence, small businesses are making use of these media to share news and opinion. These help businesses reach out to new customers and maintain their existing customers.
Besides performing the function of social connectivity, these media also play an important role in distribution of news to a wider base of audiences. Smaller businesses can also avail benefits offered by the television news networks, newspapers and blogs to gain a huge audience.
Mass Communication in relation to business
Apart from providing realistic information about a business and its offerings, mass communication tools also allow small businesses to mould consumers’ viewpoints. Social media makes it easier for the users to send their feedback about your business. The negative experience from the user can help you rouse a healthy debate to improve your product or service. Mass communication also corresponds to marketing; after all, businesses based on opinions depend on customer feedback, which in turn drives the market.
Coordination and management in organizations
In large organizations, mass communication plays a significant role in facilitating employees with important information. Large companies have several departments such as production, purchase, marketing & sales, accounts and administration. For the company to succeed these departments have to work in coordination with each other. Mass communication plays a crucial role in keeping everyone updated through periodicals and circulars. It is also important for the employees to maintain a cordial relationship amongst themselves. Mass communication helps in achieving this goal through its varied intra-organizational channels. In business, communication forms an integral part, whether the goal is to reach a maximum audience or improve employee relationships.
