Unit 1: Introduction: Meaning, Nature, and Evolution of Intellectual Property
• Perceive the scope of intellectual property law.
• Explore the history and the evolution of intellectual property law.
• Study the nature of intellectual property and distinguish between tangible and intangible property.
Unit 2: Scope and Rationale of Intellectual Property Rights
• Identify the different types of intellectual property.
• Examine the nature of each kind of intellectual property.
• Perceive the rationale and justification for providing intellectual property rights.
• Analyze the balance between dissemination of knowledge.
Unit 3: Understanding Fundamentals of Copyright
• Examine the purpose and scope of ‘copyrights’.
• Understand the essentials of copyright and the various subject-matters of copyright under the Copyright Act, 1957.
• Study the concept of ‘authorship’ and identify the term of copyright of various subject-matters of copyright under the Copyright Act, 1957.
Unit 4: Rights, Infringement, and Fair Use in Copyright
• Identify the different rights provided under copyright, including moral and economic rights.
• Distinguish between primary and secondary infringement of copyrights.

• Identify different types of infringement under the Trade Marks Act, 1999.
Unit 7: Understanding Fundamentals of Patents
• Examine the purpose and scope of ‘patents’.
• Understand the rationale and justification for providing patents.
• Analyze the protection offered by patents.
Unit 8: Registration, Term, and Infringement of Patents
• Identify the various rights of a patentee and examine the grounds for infringement under the Patents Act, 1970.
• Learn about the different stages involved in the registration of a patent.
• Analyze the concept of compulsory licensing and its purpose.
